Many of us are unaware that a hot water system required servicing. A lack of servicing can cause a hot water heater to fail sooner than it should, resulting in the costly expense of replacing the entire system.
The intervals between servicing periods can vary depending on the brand, type of water heater and how old it is.
We recently were called out to check on a rooftop Chromagen solar hot water system that was in complete disrepair. It was just 10 years old and had not been serviced in this time.
The signs of wear and tear were visible even to the untrained eye. The solar panels had built up scum on them and there was a rust stained leak occuring from the water tank. It is unlikely this system was running as efficiently as it could for quite some time.
If we had gotten to this system a few years earlier then it likely could have been saved, instead we had to replace the entire system. The good news was that we were able to swap the rooftop system which was placing a heavy load on the roof structure for a more modern heat pump hot water system that is mounted at ground level under the eaves.
